What is Sandwichon?

Sandwichon is a sandwich cake that’s recently gotten a lot of attention after going viral on tiktok. By attention, I mean most people are bashing on the idea of it and how gross it sounds, but don’t be fooled! While the outside looks like a cake, the frosting isn’t actually sweet and the inside is savory and filled with ham, cheese, chicken salad, that is layered among multiple pieces of bread.

Sandwichon was not something we’d ever make for lunch or dinner at home. Rather, it was traditionally served at get-togethers, such as baby showers or birthday parties, in south Texas, along with ensalada de coditos or potato chips as a side dish. As such, finding a recipe proved to be a challenge, but I was able to take inspiration from a few that I found and experimented to make a version very similar to what I grew up eating in the Rio Grande Valley. With our sandwichon recipe, you won’t have to wait until the next big party; you can make a small batch at home for you and your loved ones. Or feel free to adjust the servings in the recipe below if you’re making this for a larger crowd!

Why You’ll Love This Sandwichon Recipe

  • Mix of Flavors – Sandwichon has multiple layers of bread, ham, cheese, and chicken salad. The multiple fillings, the cream cheese icing, and the pineapples on top, make this dish one full of flavors!
  • Perfect for Parties – Sandwichon is a popular dish at Mexican parties. Have a potluck or event coming up? Consider making this sandwichon recipe and doubling the ingredients as necessary.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Bread – This recipe calls for almost a whole loaf of white bread, which we’ll cut the edges of. If you’re looking to save time, consider buying uncrusted bread. Looking to make this recipe healthier? Consider using wheat bread instead.
  • Cooked Ham – The first layer of our sandwichon consists of chopped cooked ham that is mixed with sour cream to make it spreadable.
  • Cheese Dip – A spreadable cheese dip, such as Cheez Whiz or Tostito’s, will make up the second layer of our big sandwich. I’d recommend sticking with a plain cheese dip, as versions with jalapeno can interfere with the flavor profile.
  • Chicken Salad – Before our last layer of bread, we’ll spread some chicken salad to our sandwichon. You can buy this premade or check out our Mexican chicken salad recipe for prepping this ahead of time!
  • Sour Cream – Most sandwichon recipes I saw online called for mayonnaise or Cool Whip, both of which got a lot of hate on social media. For this recipe, I’ve used sour cream instead for a more neutral flavor that doesn’t gross people out as much.
  • Cream Cheese – We’ll mix half a bar of cream cheese with sour cream to make our sandwich cake’s frosting. You can add a bit of jalapeno juice to make the frosting more savory.
  • Pineapple Slices – Sandwichones are typically topped with pineapple rings, cherries, and pecans to make them more presentable. Skip these, or replace them with whatever you’d like! Other recipes I’ve seen use red pimentos, mango slices, or even olives.

How to Make Sandwichon

Prepare your fillings and icing

  1. Create ham spread

Chop 5 slices of cooked ham and mix with 3 teaspoons of sour cream.

  2. Prepare chicken salad

Follow our Mexican chicken salad recipe for this step.

  3. Make icing

Mix 4 ounces of softened cream cheese and 3 tablespoons of sour cream until smooth.

Add an ounce of pineapple or jalapeno juice to give your icing flavor!
  4. Cut the bread

Cut off the crusts of your bread with a knife. If using uncrusted bread, skip this step.

Assemble the sandwichon

  1. Spread the base layer

Spread out 3 pieces of bread in a row on a sheet pan or cutting board.

You can spread a bit of mayonnaise our sour cream on the bread so it sticks to your surface.
  2. Add ham filling

Spread your ham and sour cream filling evenly across the base layer. Add another layer of bread above the ham filling.

  3. Add cheese spread

Spread the cheese dip evenly across the second layer of bread. Add another layer of bread above the cheese spread.

  4. Add chicken salad

Spread your chicken salad across the previous layer of bread. Add a final layer of bread.

  5. Add icing

Spread icing evenly over the top and sides of your sandwichon. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes so icing can set.

  6. Decorate

While the icing is setting, drain your pineapple slices and cherries. Once the icing has set, decorate your sandwichon with pineapple, cherries, and chopped pecans.
